The holidays are not easy when you’re in recovery. Many of us may find ourselves gathered around the same family, people, places and things that contributed to our illness or helped us stay sick. Some of these people have no idea what it’s like to struggle with addiction, and they are insensitive to why you are now sober, or trying to get sober, I recall at a family gathering, my uncle said, “C’mon, don’t be a snob, have one glass of champagne, you can have one glass” Ignorance is bliss.
It’s so hard to deal with people that are in denial about the disease of addiction, because that’s where I want to stay, in my own denial. It took a brave girl to look in the mirror and say this is not working anymore. That same girl has to remember, despite my desires to take a sip and sink into oblivion; I must remind myself of what will happen when I do. And trust me; it’s not the best reflection of who I am, and who I want to be.
